The deepest port in Nigeria, Lekki Deep Seaport, has been authorized by President Muhammadu Buhari to be designated as a Customs Port and Approved Wharf.

This was revealed by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) in a statement published on its Twitter account on Friday.

The statement also said that Mohammed Bello-Kokoin, the managing director of the organization, had obtained the authorisation in writing from the Ministry of Transportation.

Commercial vessels will begin berthing at the port before the end of the year with the approval and degree of readiness.

The Lekki Deep Sea port is a multi-purpose facility in the Lagos Free Zone. It is the largest sea port in Nigeria and one of the biggest in West Africa.

The port is expected to handle about six million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers and a significant volume of liquid and dry bulk non- containerized cargoes.
